On October 2, 1896, the Belleville Weekly Advocate published a long profile of “Dr. Federal Champion,” describing him as a physician who had flourished in Belleville nearly sixty years earlier. The article is valuable because it gathers business, family, and civic memories in one place. Its distance from the events is also a reason to read it critically.

The profile offers details absent from the short obituary published after Champion’s death in 1847. It describes his travels, identifies his children and some of their marriages, recalls an early business location, and names David Swyers as the person who managed the laboratory after Champion. Those details make the later article a rich guide for further research.

The contemporary obituary provides a useful comparison. It names Champion’s wife as Patience Ann Treen, says he practiced medicine in Ohio before moving to Belleville in 1840, and describes the medicine business at the time of his death. Where the accounts align, confidence grows. Where they differ or are silent, the difference itself is part of the record.

For example, the later biography gives a death date for Patience that differs from the printed date in her 1892 obituary. The early notice says one son and four daughters; the later obituary for Patience counts six children. The 1896 article names five. These are not details to quietly reconcile by choosing the neatest version. They are questions to carry forward.

The 1896 profile is best read as both a source and a research map: a community’s memory of an earlier Belleville doctor, preserved alongside clues that can be checked against contemporary news, deeds, probate files, and family records.
