The Champion story touches at least two different places in Belleville: an earlier medicine operation on High Street and a later family residence on Charles Street. Keeping them separate helps avoid a tempting but unsupported conclusion that Dr. Federal Champion lived in the house now known as Champion House.

The 1896 biography places Dr. Champion’s early operation in a two-frame house at Main and High streets, beside C. T. Reynolds’s store. An 1883 newspaper article later refers to a building on High Street as Dr. Champion’s old pill factory. These are clues to the location of his business, not proof that it was the South Charles Street residence.

The Charles Street connection comes from the next generation. In January 1855, the Semi-Weekly Advocate reported that B. F. Champion had erected an elegant family residence on Charles Street: a double, two-story brick mansion with outbuildings. B. F. was Benjamin Franklin Champion, known as Frank in the family. The report describes the property’s construction; it does not give a modern street number or legal description.

Later newspaper sale notices refer to the “Champion residence” on Charles Street and identify subsequent owners. Those reports strengthen the connection between the family and the street, while deeds and parcel records are still needed to trace the precise chain of title to today’s address.

The two locations tell different parts of the story: the doctor’s remembered workplace and the family residence associated with his son. The distinction makes the history more accurate—and more interesting.
